USI cross country inks three
The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams announced the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2003 season. Melissa Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana), Lindsey Miller (New Castle, Indiana), and Nick Waninger (Santa Claus, Indiana) are the first three runners to sign with head coach Mike Hillyard’s Screaming Eagles this spring.
Burgin, a senior at New Albany High School, is a three-time All-Hoosier Hills Conference performer and a member of the 1999 All-State team. She helped NAHS’s cross country team to a pair of conference championships, four sectional championships, three regional championships, and a semi-state title. She also helped the NAHS track and field team to three sectional titles.
An eight-time letter winner in cross country and track and field, Burgin is a Hoosier Hills Conference Champion in cross country and a member of the National Honor Society. She has been involved with several organizations at NAHS including the German Club, Spirit Club, and Student Council.
“Missy Burgin comes from a strong high school program,” Hillyard said. “She has a lot of heart and I believe that she will be a late bloomer. I think she will find a spot in our top seven this fall, perhaps in the top five.”
Miller, a senior at New Castle Chrysler High School, has earned All-North Central Conference honors in track and field, cross country, and women’s basketball. She won the 2002 NCC and sectional championships in the 800 meters and helped the NCCHS basketball team to sectional championships in 2002 and 2003 as well as the Elite Eight in 2003.
An Academic All-Conference performer in basketball and cross country, Miller is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is an eight-time letter winner in basketball, cross country, and track and field. She is the younger sister of Butler University standout guard Brandon Miller.
“Lindsey has the potential to run with our top three runners by the end of next fall,” Hillyard estimated. “She ran only one season of cross country in high school, but has excellent middle distance speed and is extremely athletic and competitive. She will make a huge impact this fall.”
Waninger is a senior at Heritage Hills High School in Lincoln City, Indiana, where he earned 12 varsity letters in cross country, track and field, and wrestling. He helped the HHHS cross country team to three conference titles, two sectional championships, and a regional championship.
A member of the National Honor Society at HHHS, Waninger has a personal-best of 4:32 in the mile and 15:41 in the 5k.
“Nick has the potential to be the best freshman in the GLVC next fall,” Hillyard stated. “A lot of fine runners have come through our program, but none with more potential than Nick Waninger.”
