Eagles open strong at nationals,
Send three runners into finals

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana track and field team started the 2003 NCAA II Outdoor Championships on the right foot as all three of its runners competing on the opening day of events qualified for the finals.
Senior men’s runner Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) finished third in his heat to qualify for the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Thurner ran a 9:16.79, placing him 10th overall. The finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase are schedule for Saturday, May 24, at 4 p.m.
Freshman Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) also advanced to the finals of the women’s 3,000 meters. Cooksey paced the field by running a 9:53.11 while Farmer finished in a tie for first in her heat with a 10:04.97, good enough for eighth place heading into the finals. The women’s 3,000-meter finals are slated for tomorrow at 7:20 p.m.
Cooksey and Farmer also will compete in the women’s 5,000 meters this Saturday. Freshman Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) will compete in the high jump on Saturday.
