Eagles ready to take shot at conference titles

The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams are making their final preparations for the GLVC Championships. The Screaming Eagles will compete for the league titles this Saturday, October 25, in Romeoville, Illinois.

The Eagles enter Saturday’s races as favorites to take home both the women’s and men’s team championships. In addition, both squads have runners that are expected to compete for an individual conference championship.

Neither team has captured a conference championship since the women’s squad won the GLVC title in 1999. For the men, it has been a much longer drought. The Eagles have not won a team championship in 12 years.

The men’s squad, which is ranked 13th in the country and fourth in the Great Lakes Region, is led by junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and sophomore Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana). Schwartz has finished no lower than ninth in any meet this season and won the individual Little State championship at the Indiana Intercollegiate.

Davis has finished in USI’s top two in every race he has run in this season. He had a top finish of sixth at the Illinois/Missouri Border Wars.

The women’s squad, which is ranked 11th in the nation and fourth in the Great Lakes Region, is led by a trio of runners including senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) and freshman Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana).

Farmer, a two-time All-GLVC performer, finished seventh at last year’s GLVC Championships while Cooksey edged Farmer for sixth en route to All-GLVC and GLVC “Freshman of the Year” honors.

Two-time All-GLVC performer, Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana), has been USI’s top finisher at the GLVC Championships each of the last two seasons. She finished third at last season’s league meet.
