The University of Southern Indiana took home the men’s and women’s team titles Saturday at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Cross Country Championships in Romeoville, Illinois. It is the first time in school history and just the third time in GLVC history that both the men’s and women’s teams from the same school have won conference titles in the same year.

Senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) finished second to lead the USI women’s squad to its first league title since 1999. Sophomore Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and junior Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) finished third and fourth, respectively, while freshman Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) finished ninth to take home GLVC “Freshman of the Year” honors.

All four athletes were awarded All-GLVC honors for their top-10 performances.

“Farmer, Cooksey, and Schneider finishing two, three, and four got us off to a great start,” said Head Coach Mike Hillyard, who won GLVC men’s and women’s “Coach of the Year” honors. “Missy Burgin has been rock-solid this year and to finish ninth in the GLVC meet as a freshman is pretty impressive.

“The biggest difference-maker for us, however, was at number five where Laura Helhowski (Hebron, Indiana) finished 11th, 18 spots better than where she finished last season,” Hillyard continued.

The men’s squad had three runners pick up All-GLVC honors as it snapped a 12-year conference title drought. Sophomore Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) finished third while juniors Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and Will Siemers (Bensenville, Illinois) finished fifth and eighth, respectively, to earn league honors.

It also marks the first time in 14 years that the USI men’s squad has won the GLVC title out-right. In 1991 the Screaming Eagles shared the league crown with Ashland University and in 1990 USI tied with Lewis University for the GLVC championship.

“We did not have anyone particular in our top four that had a great day,” Hillyard said. “Like the women’s squad, our number five was probably the big difference for us. David Tyler (Evansville, Indiana) ran a great race to finish 13th and he probably had the best all-around day of any of our competitors.”

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville finished second in both team events while SIUE’s Breanne Steffens took home the individual women’s title and the University of Indianapolis’s John Parson won the men’s individual championship. Lewis’s Andy Tremble finished 14th to earn GLVC “Freshman of the Year” honors on the men’s side.

The Eagles will return to competition in two weeks when both squads compete for the right to run at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Cary, North Carolina. The NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Championships will take place Saturday, November 8, in Allendale, Michigan.
