Former USI runner finishes fourth in NYC Marathon
Former University of Southern Indiana cross country/track and field runner Elly Rono (Kenya) finished fourth in the New York City Marathon Sunday. Rono finished the race in 2:11.31, just a minute off the winning pace.
Rono competed for the Screaming Eagles from 1996 to 98 and won three NCAA II National Championships, including the 1997 cross country championship. He also won the indoor track and field national championship in the 5,000 meters as well as the outdoor national championship in the 10,000 in 1998.
This season’s NYC Marathon saw a record 34,662 participants cross the finish line on Sunday.
He finished ninth in the Boston Marathon this past spring with a time of 2:11.49, less than two minutes off the winning time.
