USI’s Cooksey, Perry qualify for nationals,
Women finish fifth/Men finish sixth

Behind a pair of NCAA II provisional qualifying marks, the University of Southern Indiana women’s track and field team finished fifth at the Tiger Indoor Invitational Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles recorded four first-place finishes as well as a second and a third-place finish as they racked up 71 points in the 19-event, 16-team competition.
Sophomore middle distance/distance runner Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) finished first in the mile with a solid NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 4:59.26. Freshman long jumper Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana) finished first in the long jump with an NCAA II provisional leap of 18 feet, 5 ¼ inches. Perry’s jump also was a meet record.
Freshman distance runner Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) finished first in the 3,000 meters, while USI’s distance medley relay team place first with a meet-record time of 12:58.90.
The USI men’s team finished sixth on the strength of two first-place finishes and a sweep of the top three spots in the mile. The Eagles finished the 19-event, 22-team competition with 42 points.
Junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois), sophomore Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana), and freshman Danny Fisher (Nashville, Indiana) finished first, second, and third, respectively, in the mile. Schwartz and Davis helped lead USI’s distance medley relay team to a first place finish as well as a meet and school-record time of 10:25.92.
Freshman thrower Luke Keller (Jasper, Indiana) also set a school record in the shot put. Keller finished eighth with a throw of 45 feet, nine inches.
The Eagles will return to Greencastle next Saturday, February 14, to partake in the DePauw Invitational. USI will compete at the GLVC Championships in Romeoville, Illinois, Saturday, February 28.
