University of Southern Indiana women’s track and field sophomore Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) took home a pair of first place finishes to lead the Screaming Eagles to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Indiana. USI’s women had five first-place finishes in all as they recorded 83 points in the 16-team field.
Cooksey, who has won all five of the events she has competed in during the indoor track and field season, recorded another NCAA II provisional qualifying time in the mile with a first-place time of 5:02.64. She also took home the championship in the 800 meters.
Junior distance runner Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) returned to the team for the first time during the indoor season to finish first in the 5,000 meters. Schneider competed at the Doug Raymond Invitational two weeks ago and took off last weekend to participate in USI’s Homecoming festivities.
Sophomore Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) finished first in the high jump with a provisional leap of five feet, six inches, while freshman Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana) finished first in the long jump with a provisional mark of 18 feet, five inches.
Sophomore Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) finished second in the mile to help the USI men’s squad finish 11th out of 17 teams. Joining Davis with top-five finishes for the men’s squad were juniors Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and Will Siemers (Bensenville, Illinois). Schwartz finished third in the 5,000 meters, while Siemers placed fifth in the same event.
The Eagles will return to Greencastle Saturday, February 21, to participate in the DePauw Classic. USI will take its act to the GLVC Championships in Romeoville, Illinois, Saturday, February 28.
