Perry finishes second in long jump,
Cooksey/Davis advance to finals

WALNUT, Calif.—University of Southern Indiana freshman Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana) recorded a career and USI-record leap of 20 feet, 1 3/4 inches en route to a second-place performance in the long jump at the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday night.
Perry was edged by San Angelo State University’s Latisha Burns, who jumped 20 feet, 2 1/2 inches to claim the national championship in the event.
With the second-place finish in the long jump, Perry earns All-America honors for the second time this year. Perry finished sixth in the long jump at the NCAA II Indoor Championships in March.
In addition to Perry, sophomore women’s runner Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and junior men’s runner Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) competed in the prelims of their respective events.
Cooksey ran a conservative 10 minutes, 5.47 seconds in the 3,000 meters to finish second in her heat and advance to Friday evening’s finals. Davis ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in nine minutes, 10.59 seconds to finish fourth in his heat and advance to Saturday evening’s finals.
Cooksey will run the finals of the 3,000 meters Friday at 7:30 p.m. (CDT), while Davis will run the finals of the steeplechase Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
Cooksey will also compete in the prelims of the 5,000 meters, which is slated for an 9:30 p.m. on Friday. Senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) will compete in the prelims of the men’s 5,000 meters, which is slated for an 8:20 p.m. start on Friday. Sophomore high jumper Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) will compete in the high jump Saturday at 7 p.m.
