Cooksey wins title in 3,000 meters,
Advances to finals in 5,000 meters

WALNUT, Calif.—University of Southern Indiana sophomore Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) made school history Friday night at the NCAA II Outdoor National Championships. Cooksey won the 3,000 meters to become USI’s first female national champion in any sport.
Cooksey finished with a school-record time of nine minutes, 32.76 seconds, six seconds faster than the second-place runner, California State University-Los Angeles’s Sarah Bouchard.
In addition to her performance in the 3,000 meters, Cooksey follow the race by qualifying for the finals in the 5,000 meters. She finished fourth in her heat with a time of 18 minutes, 8.19 seconds. The finals are scheduled for 8:15 p.m. (CDT) today.
Senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) also competed Friday night, but came up short in his bid to qualify for the finals in the men’s 5,000 meters. Schwartz finished 14th, with a time of 14 minutes, 52.62 seconds.
In addition to Cooksey competing in the finals of the 5,000 meters tonight, sophomore Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) will compete in the women’s high jump (7 p.m.) and junior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) will compete in the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase (6:15 p.m.).
The Screaming Eagles women were in fifth place with 18 points after the second day of the three-day event. USI has scored 18 points behind Cooksey’s first-place performance and freshman Candace Perry’s (Anderson, Indiana) second-place finish in the long jump.
