USI cross country inks Gebreselassie
The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country team announced the signing of freshman Samuel Gebreselassie (Avon, Indiana) for the 2004 season. Gebreselassie is the second men’s runner to sign with Head Coach Mike Hillyard’s Screaming Eagles for the upcoming season.
Gebreselassie graduated from Avon High School where he was a member of the 2003 sectional championships squad that qualified for semi-state. He has personal-bests of 16:33 in the 5k and 10:004 in the 3,200 meters.
“Samuel is very raw, but he has a ton of talent,” Hillyard explained. “It will take at least a year in our program before he starts to emerge and I expect him to be a frontrunner for us by the fall of 2005.”
Originally from Eritrea (Africa), Gebreselassie and his family fled to Sudan 12 years ago as refugees amidst the ongoing conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia before coming to the United States shortly after.
“Samuel’s life experiences should bring a unique perspective to our team,” Hillyard said. “He has a great appreciation for everything that life in the United States has to offer. He will be a huge bonus for our program.”
Gebreselassie joins freshman Doug Higgins (Indianapolis, Indiana) in signing with the men’s squad for the 2004 campaign.
