USI runners sparkle in opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Both the University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams took first-place Saturday at the University of Evansville Early Bird Invitational. The men’s squad bested three teams with a final score of 21 points, while the women’s squad defeated UE in a two-team battle with a score of 19 points.
Junior All-American Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) won the women’s competition with a course-record time of 14 minutes, 14.46 seconds. Sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) took third with a time of 14 minutes, 52.33 seconds.
The Screaming Eagles had seven of the top 10 finishers in the women’s 4k race, while the men’s squad had six of the top 10 finishers in their 6k event.
Senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) was the men’s top finisher and finished second overall to UE’s Nick Waninger with a time of 18 minutes, 53.22 seconds. Junior Rob Garwood (Columbus, Indiana), senior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana), and junior Jake England (Valparaiso, Indiana) rounded out the top five finishers in the men’s competition.
The Eagles will return to action September 17 when they take part in the Indiana Intercollegiate in West Lafayette, Indiana. Both squads will be looking to defend their Little State titles.
