USI women 4th and men 8th in Stegemoller Classic

EVANSVILLE, IN–University of Southern Indiana junior David Tyler (Evansville, Indiana) was the men’s top finisher in the Stegemoller Classic placing 28th with a time of 26:16. The men’s team was eighth overall out of 15 teams in the “classic.”
Junior Robert Garwood (Columbus, Indiana) followed Tyler on the USI squad with an 8k time of 26:23 and placed 34th. Cal Poly Pomona’s Daniel Rojas won the individual title with a time of 24:59.
USI junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) was the women's top finisher in the Stegemoller Classic, placing fourth with a 6k time of 22:23 and helping the women’s team to a 4th place finish.
Cooksey finished the race, which was considered a preview of the NCAA Division II National Championships schedule for November 20 on the same course, was 11 seconds off the pace set by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Shannon Wommack. Wommack won the race with time of 21:42.
The top Division II finisher was Vanessa Andes of East Stroudsburg University, who had a time of 22:15. USI sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) followed Cooksey on the squad with a 16th place finish and a time of 23:28.
The next race for both squads will be October 9 at the Border Wars hosted by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The women’s 5k will be at 10 a.m., while the men’s 8k will be at 10:45 a.m.
