Eagle runners looking to defend titles
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana cross country teams will be looking to defend their respective conference titles Saturday when they compete at the GLVC Championships at the A.J. Jolly Park in Southern Campbell County, Kentucky.
The Screaming Eagles’ men have won the conference championship a GLVC-best 13 times and the women have won the title four times.
Leading the way for the men’s squad is senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and junior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana). Both finished in the top five of the league meet—Davis was third and Schwartz was fifth—last season and are considered favorites to take home the individual title.
Senior Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana), who returned from a leg injury that sidelined him for the last year and a half, is in search of his third individual title after winning the GLVC championship in 2001 and 2002.
Junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) lead the women’s squad.
Cooksey is a strong favorite to win the individual title after finishing third at the league meet in 2003. She has won five individual conference titles in indoor and outdoor track and field.
Burgin was the GLVC “Freshman of the Year” after finishing ninth at the conference meet in 2003.
The men’s 8k race starts at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) and the women’s 6k race starts at 10:30 a.m. (CDT). The awards presentation is at 11:30 a.m. (CDT).
