USI men’s cross country/track & field adds Sirbek
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country/track and field team announced that Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana) has chosen to continue his running career with Head Coach Mike Hillyard’s Screaming Eagles in 2005-06. Sirbek is the second men’s runner to sign a national letter of intent with USI this spring.
Sirbek is a senior at Oliver Morton High School where he earned nine varsity letters in tennis, swimming, track, and cross country.
A three-time All-Conference performer in cross country and two-time All-Conference performer in track, Sirbek was named the Northwest Post Tribune Runner of the Year and was a first-team All-Area performer in 2003 and 2004.
The two-time All-State cross country performer finished 10th at the IHSAA State Championships in 2003 and seventh at the state meet in 2004. He was the conference, sectional, and regional champion in the 3,200 meters during the 2004 track season and was the conference, sectional, regional, and semi-state champion in cross country this past fall.
“Tim has been among the best high school cross country runners in Indiana during the last two years,” Hillyard said. “He was pursued by many of the best Division I programs in the Midwest, so needless to say, we feel very fortunate that he has chosen to continue his academic and athletic careers at USI.
“He has an enormous amount of untapped talent,” Hillyard continued. “It will be exciting to watch his progress during the next four years.”
Sirbek holds school records in the 3,200 meters (9:29) and 5,000 meters (15:29) and recorded his best 800 meter time (1:58) as part of the school-record 4x800-meter relay team. He joins freshman Joe Rayman (West Lafayette, Indiana) in signing with the Eagles for next season.
