USI runners nab GLVC honors
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The inaugural GLVC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week awards are going to competitors from the University of Southern Indiana in a vote done by the league’s coaches.
USI men’s junior Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois) and women’s senior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) earned the honor after placing first in their individual races at the University of Evansville Early Bird Invitational this past weekend.
Alvarez finished Saturday’s 6k race in 18 minutes, 11.30 seconds, more than 16 seconds faster than the second-place performer. His performance lifted the men’s squad to a second-place finish in the three-team invitational.
Cooksey, a 10-time All-American and defending GLVC and NCAA II Great Lakes Regional champion, won her 4k race by more than 36 seconds after finishing in 14 minutes, 2.10 seconds. Like Alvarez, Cooksey’s performance lifted the women’s squad to a second-place performance, just two-points off the winning score.
The Screaming Eagles are off this weekend but return to action September 16 when they compete in the Indiana Intercollegiate in Bloomington, Indiana.
