Cooksey wins Indiana Intercollegiate,
Becomes first USI female to win event

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana women’s cross country runner Heather Cooksey (Bloomington, Indiana) dominated a field of 203 runners Friday evening to win the 67th Annual Indiana Intercollegiate.
Cooksey, who is the first female runner in USI history to capture the overall title at the Indiana Intercollegiate, finished the 5k race in 17 minutes, 46 seconds, 16 seconds faster than that of Ball State University Rose Lehe, who finished second in the overall race. Cooksey was 38 seconds ahead of the field in the Little State competition as she won that crown for the second straight year.
Elly Rono is the only other USI runner to win the Indiana Intercollegiate. He won the overall men’s competition in 1997, the year he took home the national championship.
Cooksey’s performance lifted the women’s squad to a third-place finish in the Little State competition and a seventh-place finish in the overall.
Sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) finished fifth in the Little State competition and 12th overall to aid the Screaming Eagles’ women’s squad.
Senior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) and junior Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois) led the men’s squad, which finished third in the Little State competition and sixth overall.
Davis was second in Little State and eighth overall, while Alvarez was eighth in Little State and 20th overall. Davis finished the men’s 8k race in 25 minutes, 45 seconds, while Alvarez crossed the finish line in 26 minutes, five seconds.
USI will return to action October 1 when it competes in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Illinois.
