USI men race to first-place finish,
Cooksey remains unbeaten as women finish second
CARBONDALE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team turned out one of its most dominating performances in recent memory Saturday as it finished first at the Saluki Invitational.
USI had seven runners finish in the top 13 as the Screaming Eagles finished with 28 points. Junior Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois) led the men with a second-place performance, while senior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) placed third. Alvarez finished the 8k course in 25 minutes, 03.93 seconds, while Davis crossed the finish line in 25 minutes, 15.90 seconds.
The Eagles also got a big boost from freshman Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana), sophomore Paul Jellema (Dyer, Illinois), and senior Rob Garwood (Columbus, Indiana). Sirbek and Jellema were sixth and seventh, respectively, while Garwood placed 10th.
In the women's race, senior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) kept her winning streak intact Saturday as she finished first with a 5k time of 17 minutes, 10.74 seconds. Junior Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) was third with a time of 18 minutes, 10.88 seconds, while freshman Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) was 13th with a time of 19 minutes, 04.40 seconds.
As a team, the Eagles finished second with a total of 49 points.
USI will compete at the GLVC Championships October 22 in Rensselaer, Indiana). The Eagles are looking to recapture the league crown after both squads finished second in 2004.
