Eagles look for repeat of 2005
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The No. 22 University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team is looking to capture its second straight conference title Saturday when it competes at the GLVC Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois. The 8k race is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
USI's dominated the field a year ago as the Screaming Eagles had six of the top 10 finishers in 2005.
The Eagles, however, are without the services of senior Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois), who has been sidelined for most of the season with a leg injury. Alvarez was second, individually, at the 2005 GLVC Championships.
Junior Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) and sophomore Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana) need to have strong performances if the Eagles are to hold off all challengers. Jellema was fifth at last year's league meet, while Sirbek was sixth en route to earning GLVC Freshman of the Year honors. Both were All-GLVC in 2005 and are coming off top 10 performances at the Saluki Invitational two weeks ago.
