Eagle runners to compete at nationals

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team will compete at the NCAA II Championships Saturday at the Division II Fall Sports Festival in Pensacola, Florida. The 10k race is slated for a 9 a.m. start.

USI's men qualified for the national championships with its fifth-place finish at the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Championships last Saturday.

Leading the Screaming Eagles is junior Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) and sophomore Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana). Jellema was second at the GLVC Championships and third at the NCAA II Great Lakes Region championships, while Sirbek was eighth at the conference championships and 26th at the region championships.

Senior Tristan Mannix (Crothersville, Indiana), juniors Sam Gebreselassie (Avon, Indiana) and Justin Thomas (Indianapolis, Indiana), sophomore Joe Rayman (West Lafayette, Indiana), and freshman Matt Zielske (Elkhart, Indiana) will round out the men's seven-man lineup.

In order to earn All-American status, a runner must be one of the top 30 U.S. born runners.
