Eagles open indoor schedule
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's track and field team opens its 2007 indoor schedule Saturday at the Indiana Open II in Bloomington, Indiana.
USI features a different look in 2007 as juniors Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois) and Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) will lead the distance squad after sitting out the 2006 campaign. Jellema earned All-America honors during the cross country season, while Alvarez was the Eagles' number one runner during the fall before and injury ended his season prematurely.
Also look for freshman Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana) to make an impact after sitting out the 2006 track and field seasons. Sirbek has been one of USI's top cross country runners the last two years and will give the Eagles a boost in the distance events.
USI's sprinters are led by freshman sprinter/middle distance runner Brandon Jones (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and sophomore sprinter Austin Inge (Ossian, Indiana).
Jones, who sat out the 2006 indoor season, set a school record in the 400 meters during the outdoor campaign. Inge set a school record in the indoor 200 meters as well as a freshman record in the outdoor 200 meters a year ago.
