EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana men's track and field junior
Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) set a school record in the 3,000 meters Saturday at the Iowa State Classic in Aimes, Iowa.
Jellema was eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of eight minutes, 14.31 seconds. His time was nearly four seconds faster than former All-American Elly Rono's mark, which was set in 1998.
Jellema also ran the final leg for the Screaming Eagles' distance medley relay team, which set an NCAA II provisional mark with its time of 10 minutes, 14.33 seconds. Junior
Tristan Mannix (Crothersville, Indiana) and freshmen
Brandon Jones (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and
Andrew Menner (Greenwood, Indiana) rounded out USI's DMR squad.
Freshman
Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana) also had a solid weekend. He nearly missed a provisional mark in the 5,000 meters with his time of 14 minutes, 52.47 seconds. Sirbek also ran the 3,000 meters in eight minutes, 34.18 seconds.
The Eagles also finished 14th as a team at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Indiana, on Saturday.
Freshmen
Matt Zielske (Elkhart, Indiana) and
Brandon Campbell (Portage, Indiana) finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 3,000 meters, while sophomore
Taylor Sellers (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) was seventh in the 1,000 meters and freshman
Jake Stahl (Gentryville, Indiana) was seventh in the mile.
USI returns to action Friday when it competes at the Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana. The GLVC Championships are February 24 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
