Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) shattered the meet record en route to a first-place finish in the 5,000 meters Saturday at the Gatorade Classic.
Despite a bitter wind chill, Jellema finished the race in an NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 14 minutes, 28.09 seconds, more than 21 seconds faster than the previous meet record and nearly 20 seconds faster than the second-place time.
In all, the Screaming Eagles had four of the top five finishers in the 5,000 meters and a total of seven top-five finishers in the meet.
Senior
Rob Garwood (Columbus, Indiana), freshman
Brandon Campbell (Portage, Indiana), and junior
Rob Roads (Terre Haute, Indiana) finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000 meters while freshmen
Jake Stahl (Gentryville, Indiana) and
Taylor Sellers (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 800 meters.
Stahl and Sellers also teamed with sophomores
Brandon Jones (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and
Austin Inge (Ossian, Indiana) to lead USI to a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
The Eagles return to action when they run a split squad next weekend. Most of the squad will compete at the Indiana Little State Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, Friday and Saturday while a few competitors will participate at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, on Friday.
