Jellema, Sirbek post provisional times in 5,000 meters

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana men's track and field junior Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) and freshman Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana) posted NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times in the 5,000 meters this past weekend at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays in Hillsdale, Michigan.

Jellema was third in the event with a time of 14 minutes, 6.96 seconds, while Sirbek was ninth with a time of 14 minutes, 22.14 seconds. Nearly 175 runners from around the country competed in the 5,000 meters at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays.

Jellema's time was just 6.96 seconds away from an automatic qualifying mark and ranks him third on USI's all-time list behind former greats Ben Kapsoiya (13:56.10) and Elly Rono (13:56.30). Sirbek also earned a spot on USI's all-time 5,000-meter list at fifth with his finish.

The Screaming Eagles also competed at the SIU Edwardsville Twilight Open Saturday night in Edwardsville, Illinois. USI posted six top-10 finishes, including freshman Robert Becker's (Valparaiso, Indiana) second-place finish in the 5,000 meters.

USI returns to action May 4-5 when it competes at the GLVC Championships in Edwardsville.
