Paul Jellema |
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana junior
Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) was named the GLVC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays this past weekend. It is the second time during the outdoor season that Jellema has garnered the award.
Jellema finished third out of 174 competitors in the 5,000 meters and was the top collegiate finisher in the event. His time of 14 minutes, 6.96 seconds, ranks first in the GLVC and fifth in the nation.
The mark also places Jellema third on USI's all-time performance list in the 5,000 meters, just behind former USI greats Ben Kapsoiya (13:56.10) and Elly Rono (13:56.30).
Jellema and the rest of the Screaming Eagles will compete at the GLVC Championships Friday and Saturday in Edwardsville, Illinois. Jellema is expected to make a run at the GLVC record in the 10,000 meters Friday night and the school record in the 5,000 meters Saturday.
