Jellema earns top regional honor

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana junior track and field distance runner
Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) was named the Great Lakes Region Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Jellema had a stellar spring, posting an automatic qualifying time in the 10,000 meters and a provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 meters.
An All-American in cross country and during the indoor track and field season, Jellema will double in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the NCAA II Outdoor Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jellema won both events at the GLVC Outdoor Championships.
In 2007, Jellema broke the school-record in the indoor 3,000 meters and moved into second on USI's outdoor 10,000-meter performance list, where he ranks between GLVC Hall of Fame runners Jim Nolan and Elly Rono.
He also moved into third all-time on USI's outdoor 5,000-meter performance list.
Jellema competes in the 10,000 meters Thursday at 7:20 p.m. (CDT). The prelims for the 5,000 meters are Friday at 6:20 p.m., while the final in the 5,000 meters is scheduled for May 26 at 7:03 p.m.
