Jellema cruises into 5,000-meter final

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—University of Southern Indiana junior
Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) advanced to the final in the 5,000 meters Friday evening at the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Jellema was second in his heat and will be seeded third in Saturday's final after crossing the finish line in 14 minutes, 42.13 seconds.
Thursday night, Jellema finished seventh in the 10,000 meters en route to his third All-America honor of the 2006-07 cross country/track and field season. He will get a chance at a fourth All-America honor and a possible national championship when he takes the starting line in the final of the 5,000 meters Saturday at 7:03 p.m. (CDT).
In addition to the 5,000 meters, freshman
Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana) competes in the final of the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
