Eagles sign pair of runners
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's cross country/track and field team announced that freshmen Andrew Dixon (Petersburg, Indiana) and Justin Kendrick (Ellettsville, Indiana) have signed national letters of intent to compete for Head Coach Mike Hillyard's Screaming Eagles in 2007-08. They are the first two to sign with the men's cross country/track and field program this summer.
Dixon graduated from Pike Central High School in Petersburg, Indiana, where he earned nine varsity letters in cross country, track, and swimming. While at PCHS, Dixon set school 5k records in cross country as a freshman and senior. He also set a school record in the 3,200 meters.
A two-time All-Conference performer in both cross country and track, Dixon won the sectional championship in the 3,200 meters as sophomore in 2005 before finishing 22nd in the 3,200 meters at the IHSAA Championships as a senior in 2007. He also was a semi-state qualifier in cross country during his senior season.
Kendrick graduated from Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, Indiana, where he earned 11 varsity letters in cross country, track, and swimming.
A state qualifier in cross country as a sophomore in 2004, Kendrick was EHS's most valuable performer in cross country as a junior and senior and was the most improved runner as a sophomore. Kendrick also was EHS's most valuable freshman on the track in 2004.
"Andrew and Justin are both late bloomers," Hillyard said. "When we began recruiting them, neither had broken 10 minutes, 10 seconds in the 3,200 meters. By the end of the spring, Justin had recorded a personal-best of nine minutes, 19 seconds and Andrew had a personal-best of nine minutes, 39 seconds—which ranked both among the top 10 seniors in Indiana in the 3,200 meters this spring.
"They add solid depth to our roster this fall and will play a major role for us in the years to come," Hillyard continued. "We are fortunate to add a couple of quality you men like Andrew and Justin to the squad."
