Eagles in search of historic 15th title
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The No. 7 University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team is looking for its league-record 15th conference championship Saturday when it competes at the GLVC Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.
USI, which has won two straight GLVC championships and three of the last four, is the favorite coming into the meet, but figures to get a stiff challenge from No. 18 University of Missouri-Rolla and No. 21 Northern Kentucky University.
Senior Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) also is the favorite to win the individual title. Jellema has the conference's top 8k mark this season after finishing 19th at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic with a time of 24 minutes, 34.57 seconds.
UM-Rolla's Joffroi Holcombe and Chris Murray also have posted solid 8k times this season and will challenge Jellema for the conference's top spot. However, USI junior Tim Sirbek (Hammond, Indiana) and senior Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois) have a chance to be Jellema's closest competition in the race for first place.
The GLVC Championships will take place at Butler University's Varsity Fields and begin with the women's race at 8:30 a.m. (CDT). The men's race follows at 9:30 a.m. (CDT).
