Eagles sign New York standout
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's cross country/track and field team announced the signing of freshman Brendan Devine (Bethel, New York) to a national letter of intent for the 2008-09 season. Devine is the fourth runner to sign with Head Coach Mike Hillyard's Screaming Eagles this spring.
Devine is currently a senior at Monticello High School (Monticello, New York) where he has earned 12 varsity letters in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.
In cross country, Devine finished fourth overall, second in Class A, out of nearly 600 runners at the 2007 New York State Championship. During his senior season, Devine racked up seven first-place finishes and 13 top-two finishes. He also set four course records and was second at the AAU National Championship last fall.
On the track, Devine won six Sullivan County titles in the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters during his indoor career. Entering the 2008 outdoor season, Devine already had racked up three county championships in the 3,200 meters and 1,600 meters.
Academically, Devine brings an impressive resume to USI having been the president of MHS's National Honor Society during his senior year.
"We are thrilled to add a student-athlete of Brendan's caliber to our group," Hillyard said. "Brendan has lofty goals, possesses great leadership skills, and is a very tough racer. He has a bright future and we couldn't be happier to have him competing for USI."
Devine joins incoming freshmen Dustin Emerick (Elmwood, Indiana), Kiel Lovekin (LaPorte, Indiana), and Chester Vanek (Chesterton, Indiana) on USI's list of newcomers. The Eagles are looking for their fourth consecutive GLVC title and fifth in the last six years.
