Eagles in search of fourth straight GLVC title

EVANSVILLE, Ind.The University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team will be looking to capture its fourth straight conference title and fifth in the last six years when it competes at the GLVC Championships Saturday in Rolla, Missouri. The men's 8k is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m., while the women's 6k is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start.

USI, which maintained its national ranking of 12th in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association Division II Top 25 Poll, has won more conference titles (15) than any team in any sport in GLVC history.

The Screaming Eagles, who entered this season in what looked to be a rebuilding year, have simply reloaded and are sporting one of its deepest squads in the program's history.

Freshman Dustin Emerick (Elmwood, Illinois) has led the Eagles in three of their four meets, including the University of Evansville Invitational last weekend. USI finished third out of 22 teams and had seven of the top 28 runners, with Emerick finishing 11th.

Emerick, who is fourth on the GLVC 8k performance list this year with his time of 25:05.64 at the UE Invitational, is one of a handful of USI runners that could challenge for an individual title Saturday. The Eagles have seven competitors ranked in the top 10 of the GLVC 8k performance list and eight of the top 15.

Sophomore Andrew Dixon (Petersburg, Indiana) ranks third on the list with his 8k time of 25:05.51 at the Greater Louisville Classic, while senior Bryan Phillips (Kokomo, Indiana), junior Matt Zielske (Elkhart, Indiana), and freshman David Goodman (Valparaiso, Indiana) are fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively.

Freshman Brendan Devine (Bethal, New York) and junior Brandon Campbell (Portage, Indiana) are ranked ninth and 10th, respectively, while senior Robert Roads (Terre Haute, Indiana) is 14th. Unlike years' past, All-GLVC honors will go to the top 15 finishers at the conference meet. In previous years, All-GLVC honors were limited to the top 10 finishers at the league meet.

USI's top competition Saturday figures to come from Northern Kentucky University and Drury University. NKU, which slipped to 22nd in the latest national rankings, sports the league's top-ranked 8k performer in Drew Harris. Drury, which fell to 25th in the latest national rankings, has the GLVC's second-ranked 8k competitor in Jaime Villa Zapatero.
