USI’s Byrne advances to NCAA II national meet
USI men’s team finishes 4th
University of Southern Indiana sophomore Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana) advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships for cross country on Saturday, November 17, with a third place finish in the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Saturday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles missed advancing to the national championships as a team by finishing fourth in the regional.
The Division II national championship meet will be in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, and hosted by Slippery Rock University.
Byrne, who won the Great Lakes Valley Conference individual championship two weeks ago, cruised to a third place showing with a 10k time of 31:55, just 11 seconds off the pace set by Lewis University’s Arturo Cabral. Cabral picked up the regional’s individual title with a time of 31:44.
Lewis University and Wayne State University advanced as teams to the national championship meet, placing one and two on Saturday.
Freshman Chris Swisher (Milan, Indiana) was second for the Eagles, placing 20th with a time of 33:29. Sophomore Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois), who was 23rd with a time of 33:41, followed Swisher, while freshman Danny Fisher (Nashville, Indiana) was 25th by turning in a time of 33:44.
