USI men’s golf adds four for 2005-06
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men’s golf team announced the commitment of four new players for the 2005-06 season. The four players are the first to commit to USI Head Coach Matt Scheessele this year.
Transferring to USI from Lindsey Wilson College this fall is Rafe Walker (Henderson, Kentucky). Walker recorded his best finish at the Kentucky Independent College Invitational last year, placing ninth with a two-round 155 (79-76). He also placed 22nd at the Mid-South Conference Championship, shooting a two-round 165 (88-77).
Prior to attending Lindsey Wilson, Walker lettered in golf and baseball at Henderson County High School (Henderson, Kentucky). He earned All-Region honors during his junior and senior year.
Caleb Hughes (Carmi, Illinois) crosses the Wabash River from John A. Logan College to USI this fall. Hughes placed third at the 2004 Illinois Central College Classic as a sophomore and was second at the 2003 Logan Fall Invitational as a freshman. He also recorded a 25th place individual finish nationally as a freshman when the Volunteers were the NJCAA runner-up.
Before beginning his collegiate career at John A. Logan, Hughes helped Carmi-White County High School to three state tournament appearances. He also earned All-North Egypt Conference first team honors three times and was named to the All-South team twice.
Joining Hughes in crossing the Wabash is sophomore Ryan Bobbitt (Mt. Carmel, Illinois). Bobbitt, who did not play collegiate golf while attending Millikin University and Wabash Valley College the last two years, was a four-year letterwinner at Mt. Carmel High School. He earned All-Conference honors each of his four years at MCHS and was the state finalist as a senior.
Drew Dunkerly (Linton, Indiana) will begin his collegiate career at USI this fall. Dunkerly received nine varsity letters in golf, tennis, and basketball during his four years at Linton-Stockton High School.
In addition to being named All-SWIAC and All-TRC all four years, Dunkerly finished his prep career by being named All-State and honorable mention Academic All-State as a senior. He also was the sectional and regional individual champion last year at LSHS.
"Each of these student-athletes bring a different aspect to an already solid nucleus,” said Scheessele. “This year’s additions will provide the USI men's golf team with a good mixture of young talent and experienced veterans. These additions and the experienced team in place should make for a very exciting season."
