Men’s soccer looks to host GLVC first round match

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team needs a pair of victories this weekend to earn the right to host a first round match in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Screaming Eagles enter this weekend with an 8-7-0 overall record, 5-3-0 in the GLVC.

The GLVC Tournament first round matches will be Wednesday, November 6, while the finals will be Saturday and Sunday, November 9-10, and hosted by the number one seed. The league’s number one seed has a first round bye.

USI starts this week’s action by hosting Saint Joseph’s College Friday, October 25, at 5 p.m. The Pumas, 5-11-0 overall and 2-5-0 GLVC, come to Strassweg Field with the hope of qualifying for the conference tournament. SJC needs a pair of victories this weekend to keep its hopes alive.

The Eagles have dominated the series, winning 14 of the 17 matches. The Pumas got the better of the Eagles last fall, winning 2-1 in double overtime, in Rensselaer, Indiana.

USI will finish the league schedule on Sunday, October 27, when it hosts the University of Indianapolis for Senior Day. The noon match will feature a Greyhound club in the same position as the Pumas. Indianapolis, 2-10-3 overall and 2-6-0 GLVC, needs a win over Kentucky Wesleyan College on Friday and USI on Sunday to stay in consideration for a berth in the league tournament.

The Eagles also have won 14 of 17 matches with Indianapolis, but the Greyhounds defeated USI, 3-1, at home last fall.

USI senior forward/midfielder Duncan Bray (Scotland) and senior forward Greg Henry (France) are the team’s leading scorers with 21 points each. Henry is the team’s leading goal scorer with nine, while Bray has posted a team-best 11 assists.

Between the posts, freshman goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) is putting together an impressive first season and is a GLVC Freshman of the Year candidate. Penick is 6-3-0 in goal for the Eagles with a 1.41 goals against average in 11 matches.
