USI men’s soccer starts GLVC action
The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team starts GLVC action this weekend when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Friday, September 19, and Lewis University, Sunday, September 21, at Strassweg Field. Match times are set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Screaming Eagles dropped to 1-3-0 after a tough road trip to Florida. USI fell at the hands of 25th-ranked University of Tampa, 3-0, and Florida Southern University, 3-2, in overtime.
Senior midfielder/forward Duncan Bray (Scotland) leads the team with seven points on two goals and three assists. Senior forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) and senior midfielder Greg Dingrando (Marion, Illinois) are tied for second on the team with four points each. Dingrando has a pair of goals for four points, while Settles has a goal and two assists.
While the Eagles have lost their last two, Wisconsin-Parkside has won its last two and is 3-2-0 this fall. UWP outscored Saint Xavier University and Saint Francis University by a combined 7-0 in last weekend’s wins. Junior midfielder/forward Dustin Wagner leads the Rangers with six points on two goals and two assists.
USI also hopes to get back on track against the Rangers. The Eagles trail 11-3-1 in the series after losing 2-1 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last fall.
The Flyers, who are 1-3-2 overall and play the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Friday night before coming to Evansville, are hoping to rebound after a tough 1-0 loss to the University of Missouri-Rolla. The Miners defeated Lewis with the games only goal in the final 15 seconds of the match.
For the season, Lewis is led by freshman forward Cathal Brady, who had 13 points on six goals and one assist.
USI split a pair of overtime matches with the Flyers last year. The Eagles lost 1-0 in double overtime during the regular season, but bounced back to win in the GLVC Tournament semifinals in triple overtime and on penalty kicks. USI leads the overall series, 15-12-0.
