Eagles remain perfect in the GLVC
@Southern Indiana (7-3-0 6-0-0 GLVC): 1
Northern Kentucky (3-6-2 1-2-2 GLVC): 0
Evansville, IN—University of Southern Indiana senior midfielder Duncan Bray (Scotland) scored the game-winner with 1:34 to play in the second “sudden victory” overtime to defeat Northern Kentucky University, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI wins its sixth in a row to raise its record to 7-3-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the GLVC, while NKU fell to 3-6-2 overall and 1-2-2 GLVC.
The game-winning play was started by USI sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana). Penick, who picked up his first assist as a Screaming Eagle, threw ball down the right side to senior midfielder Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana), who passed the ball to Bray in the midfield. From there, Bray used two quick dribbles to beat the defense and shoot by the NKU goalkeeper for the goal.
The goal was Bray’s fourth of the year, tying him with Settles for the team lead. Settles’ fifth assist of the year also tied him with Bray for the team lead this fall. In addition to assisting on the game-winner, Penick also made six saves in his sixth shutout of the season.
The Screaming Eagles’ 6-0-0 in the GLVC continues to match the pace of the 1990 USI team that posted a perfect conference championship season.
The Eagles will conclude the three-match homestand Friday, October 10, when they host 5th-ranked Truman State University at Strassweg Field. Match time on Friday is 5 p.m. USI will resume GLVC action Sunday, October 12, when it travels to Kentucky Wesleyan College.
