USI men’s soccer to host Bellarmine in first round
The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team will host Bellarmine University in the first round of the GLVC Tournament scheduled to begin Sunday, November 2. The kickoff at Strassweg Field will be 1 p.m.
The Screaming Eagles enter the tournament with a 9-6-1 overall record and will be the number two seed after finishing the GLVC schedule with an 8-2-0 record. USI completed the regular season and conference schedule with a 1-0 double overtime victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis last weekend.
The Eagles are led by senior midfielders Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) and Duncan Bray (Scotland) with 17 points each. Settles has a team-high six goals, including five game winners, while Bray has a team-best 7 assists.
Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) leads the team with a 1.40 goals against average and five shutouts. Since starting the year 0-3-0, Penick has led the Eagles to an 8-3-1 record.
This is the 16th appearance in the GLVC Tournament for the Eagles, who have won nine league championships since 1979.
Bellarmine enters the GLVC first round with an 8-7-3 overall record and will be the seventh seed after completing league play with a 2-5-3 mark.
In GLVC action this fall, USI defeated the Knights, 2-1, at Strassweg Field in October. The Eagles lead the all-time series 18-6-1, including victories in the 1980 and 1989 GLVC Championship matches.
The GLVC Tournament semifinals and championship match will be hosted by number-one seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Friday, November 7, and Sunday, November 9. Game times are still to be determined.
