Bray edges Eagles into semifinals
Box Score
University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer senior midfielder Duncan Bray (Shetland, Scotland) scored at the 58:35 mark of the second half to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Bellarmine University in the first round of the GLVC Tournament Sunday at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Indiana.
Bray looked as if he was heading to the right side of Bellarmine goalkeeper Brad Lipe but was able to put his left foot on the ball at the last second to give USI the winning goal. Senior forward Scott Henderson (Evansville, Indiana) set the fast break up with a nice pass down the center of the field that led Bray past the Bellarmine defense.
Both squads scored early as each team used a header off indirect kicks to get onto the scoreboard.
The Eagles started the scoring less than two minutes into the contest when senior midfielder Shawn Sloan (St. Peters, Missouri), from around midfield, found fellow classmate Jared Anslinger (Evansville, Indiana) in the box to set up USI’s first goal.
Bellarmine answered less than four minutes later as Phillip Glaser took an indirect kick inside of the Knights’ attacking third to find Joe Barnowski inside of the box. Barnowski’s header tied the match at a goal each and set up what looked to be a shootout.
However, both goalkeepers stood tall as they combined for 10 saves. USI sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) spurred the Eagles’ defensive effort as he came away with seven saves and the victory in 90 minutes of action.
The second-seeded Eagles (10-6-1) will play the third seed, Lewis University (10-5-2), which defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 3-0, Sunday in Romeoville, Illinois. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Friday, November 7, in Edwardsville, Illinois. Bellarmine ends its season with a 8-8-3 record.
