Bray named GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year
University of Southern Indiana senior forward/midfielder Duncan Bray (Scotland) was named the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for men’s soccer. Bray is the first USI men’s soccer player to receive this award.
The native of Shetland, Scotland, joins past USI winners Jessica Pigman in women’s soccer Laura Compton in women’s golf Andrew Majxner in men’s tennis Elizabeth Prewett in women’s basketball Shannon Wells in volleyball and Emily Blinzinger in women’s tennis. Majxner, Wells, and Blinzinger were all two-time winners in their respective sports.
The GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year award is based upon academic excellence, academic performance, and athletic accomplishments in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets the Academic All-American standards (3.2 GPA), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.
The conference award is just the latest in the long line of honors Bray has received this year. In December, Bray was named first team NSCAA Scholar All-America for the second straight year and became the third USI men’s soccer player to ever be named NSCAA All-American. Along with his first team All-American award, Bray was first team All-Region and All-GLVC.
Bray finished his career with 62 career points on 18 goals and 26 assists. The 26 assists ranks fifth all-time at USI and resulted in nine game-winning goals during his three seasons at USI. The 2002 Academic All-American also concluded his tenure with the Eagles by scoring four game winning goals of his own.
Bray and the Eagles have been a great combination the last two seasons, producing back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1991 and 1992 and two-straight GLVC Tournament semifinal appearances for the first time since 1990 and 1991. Over the last two seasons, USI is 15-5-0 (.750) in the GLVC, 23-15-1 (.603) overall.
