USI men’s soccer picked to place fifth in GLVC
The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team was picked to place fifth in the GLVC this fall in a vote of the league’s coaches. The Screaming Eagles, who were 10-7-1 overall and 8-2-0 in the GLVC a year ago, enter the season with only four returning starters and 13 newcomers.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville received nine first-place votes and 99 points to edge Lewis University for the number one spot in the preseason poll. The Cougars ended the 2003 season with a 16-4-1 regular season record and a perfect 10-0 conference record to earn first place among GLVC teams. The team was ranked 17th in the final 2003 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
Conference play begins on September 17 and culminates with the GLVC tournament hosted by the number one seed at the conclusion of regular season play. This year’s conference tournament will feature a new format of six teams instead of eight with semifinal and final games being played November 5 and 7.
USI concludes the preseason season Saturday afternoon at the University of Evansville for the second annual Mayor’s Cup. Match time is 2 p.m. The Eagles open the regular season at home when Harris Stowe State College visits Strassweg Field Friday, August 27, for a 7 p.m. match.
