EVANSVILLE, IN– The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team stumbled in its GLVC opener, 4-2, to Quincy University Friday evening at Strassweg Field. USI falls to 1-5-1 overall, while Quincy goes to 3-3-2.
The Hawk jumped out to a 1-0 lead five minutes into the match before USI could get onto the board. The Screaming Eagles matched Quincy’s goal on freshman forward Michael Dugger’s (Hanson, Kentucky) fourth goal of the year at 9:56.
USI freshman midfielder Sam Gelven (St. Louis, Missouri) looped in a pass to Dugger, who got behind the Quincy defense and headed the ball into the back net.
Quincy responded with a pair of goals to retake the lead, 3-1, before halftime.
In the second half, the Hawks added another goal to increase its lead to 4-1 before USI could score a second goal. The Eagles cut the margin to 4-2 on freshman forward Evan Stoll’s (Washington, Indiana) third goal of the year.
Stoll scored on a break away off a pass from sophomore back Brian Shepherd (St. Louis, Missouri) at 72:32.
USI dominated the game from that point forward, but could not find the back of the net again. The Eagles’ defense stepped up, allowing only two Quincy shots in the final 18 minutes.
The Eagles resumes GLVC action Sunday when they host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at Strassweg Field. Game time is noon.
