USI menís soccer falls to SIUE

EVANSVILLE, Ind.óThe University of Southern Indiana menís soccer team fell to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 4-0, Sunday at Strassweg Field. It was the fourth straight loss and the sixth in seven tries for the Screaming Eagles.
In just the second minute of the contest, SIUEís John Matthews headed the ball past junior goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) off a corner kick to give the Cougars a one goal advantage.
Despite giving up two more goals in the first half, Penick came up with some impressive saves. He finished the first half with a season-high tying eight saves before giving way to senior Josh Hill (Maple Park, Illinois) at the break.
The Cougars (7-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 GLVC) scored in the 32nd and the 37th minutes of the first period to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission. They held a 16-1 advantage in the shots category at halftime.
USI (1-6-1 overall, 0-2-0 GLVC) came up with more of an attack in the second half, but still was unable to get a shot on goal in five attempts. Hill faced seven SIUE shots in the second half, giving up a goal and coming away with a pair of saves.
SIUE added its final goal in the 84th minute of the contest to come away with the 4-0 victory.
The Eagles will return to action this Friday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College. Kick-off is slated for 5 p.m. at Strassweg Field.
