Men's Soccer starts 2005 campaign on the road
EVANSVILLE, Ind. Ė The University of Southern Indiana menís soccer team begins the 2005 campaign with a road trip through the State of Missouri for a pair matches this weekend. The Screaming Eagles play at Truman State University Friday at 4 p.m. and conclude the road trip at Harris Stowe State College Sunday at 1 p.m.
USI begins the 2005 regular season after a strong showing in the Mayorís Cup exhibition match against the University of Evansville. After allowing two goals in the first 19 minutes of the match, the Eagles were a goal better than the Aces in the final 60 minutes of action.
Sophomore forward Michael Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky), the Eaglesí top returning scorer from last year, scored USIís goal in the match against Evansville. Dugger posted a team-high 16 points and eight goals in his first year with USI in 2004.
Defensively, the Eagles are led by junior captain Brian Shepherd (St. Louis, Missouri) and senior goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana). Shepherd has led the Eagles to a 1.87 goals against average (GAA) the last two seasons.
Penick needs three shutouts this season to move into third place all-time at USI and enters the season with a career-GAA of 1.57.
The Bulldogs of Truman State also kick-off their season on Friday in Kirksville, Missouri, and are coming off a 12-4-3 record in 2004. Truman State is led by senior midfielders Martin Clayes and Paul Link.
Clayes led the Bulldogs with 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists, while Link followed with 20 points on nine goals and two assists.
Truman State won the only meeting with USI last season, 3-1, at the Quincy University Tournament. The Bulldogs also lead the all-time series, 9-4-1.
The Eagles conclude the road trip on the Harris Stowe State campus in St. Louis, Missouri. The Hornets, who were 3-14-0 last year, will be kicking-off their season Sunday when the Eagles come to visit.
Last season, USI started the 2004 campaign with a 5-0 victory over the Hornets and lead the all-time series with HSSC, 5-0-0.
The Eagles begin the home part of the 2005 schedule September 3 when USI hosts Ashland University for a menís and womenís doubleheader.
