USI men's soccer opens home schedule Sunday
Eagles host Georgetown (Ky.) for afternoon match
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team opens its home schedule Sunday when it hosts Georgetown College for a 3 p.m. match at Strassweg Field. Sunday's match will be the first meeting between USI and Georgetown in men's soccer.
The Screaming Eagles (1-1-0) started the year by splitting a road trip to Pennsylvania. USI won its season opener for the second year in a row by defeating 25th-ranked Mercyhurst College, 2-1, in double-overtime, but lost to Gannon University, 3-1, to finish the road swing.
The Eagles were led in the victory over Mercyhurst by senior midfielder Carl Carr (England), who scored both USI goals. Carr recorded his first goal of the year by converting a penalty kick and later scored the game-winner with 10 minutes to play in the second "sudden victory" overtime.
Georgetown (0-1-0) opened the year with 2-1 loss to Union College and plays Ohio Northern University on Saturday before traveling to USI.
The USI-Georgetown match also has brothers playing against each other for the first time on a soccer field. USI will feature senior defender Matt Vossmer (Frankfort, Kentucky), while Georgetown has freshman forward Aaron Vossmer.
Following the USI-Georgetown match, the Eagles begin a three-match road swing in the GLVC. The road trip begins across the Ohio River September 4 at Kentucky Wesleyan College. USI will not return to Strassweg Field until September 14 when it host Saint Joseph's College for an evening match.
