USI to play a pair of regional foes
Eagles host Northwood and Saginaw Valley State
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team concludes a four-match homestand by playing a pair of Midwest Regional opponents from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this weekend at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles (1-1-0) start the weekend against Northwood University at 7:30 p.m. Friday and finish the homestand versus Saginaw Valley State University at noon Sunday.
USI has split the first two matches in the homestand. The Eagles started the year by losing a non-conference contest to Marian College, 2-1, but bounced back to open GLVC action with a 2-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College.
USI freshman midfielder Caleb Johnson (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles in the win over KWC with a goal and an assist. Junior midfielder Paul Hutchens (Libertyville, Illinois) joined Johnson in the scoring column with the first goal against KWC, while sophomore midfielder Justin Fox (Avon, Indiana) had USI's only goal in the loss to Marian.
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Andrew Haley (Wentzville, Missouri) has been in the goal for the Eagles during the first two games. The shutout of KWC was Haley's third since joining USI last year.
Northwood (0-2-0) comes to Evansville still looking for its first win of the year. The Timberwolves started the season with 2-0 and 6-4 losses the GLVC's Lewis University and Saint Joseph's College. Northwood had its match with Missouri University of Science and Technology, scheduled for Wednesday, cancelled.
Northwood junior midfielder Steve Hufstader leads the Timberwolves with two of the four goals in the loss to Saint Joseph's.
Saginaw Valley State (0-2-0) also is looking for its first win of the year after being knocked off by a pair of GLVC opponents. The Cardinals lost to Quincy University, 4-0, followed by a loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 6-1.
The matches this weekend will be the first meeting in men's soccer between USI, Northwood, and Saginaw Valley State.
