Eagles' rally comes up short,
Fall to Quincy, 4-3
Quincy (7-4-0, 2-4-0 GLVC): 4
at Southern Indiana (5-6-0, 2-4-0 GLVC): 3
Sophomore forward Simon Rawnsley
(Bradford, England) had two goals and freshman midfielder Caleb Johnson
(Evansville, Indiana) recorded a pair of assists, but it was not enough to get the University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team back to the .500 mark in the GLVC as the Screaming Eagles fell to Quincy University, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field.
After a scoreless first half, the fireworks picked up in the second period as Rawnsley broke the defensive stalemate in the 54th minute with the first of his two goals off an assist by sophomore midfielder Justin Fox
Quincy (7-4-0, 2-4-0 GLVC) answered seven minutes later when sophomore forward Grant Ellison found the back of the net for the first of three straight goals that all came within a 12 minute span.
Ellison added the second goal in the 67th minute and completed the hat-trick less than six minutes later to give the Hawks a 3-1 advantage.
Rawnsley's second goal of the contest, this time off an assist from Johnson, came in the 79th minute and cut the Hawks' lead in half.
However, the Hawks ended the Eagles' momentum a minute later as sophomore midfielder Jake Pittroff scored an unassisted goal to put Quincy up 4-2.
Senior forward/midfielder Mike Bendzen
(Evansville, Indiana) scored a goal off a pass from Johnson at the 89:35 mark of the game, but the Hawks were able to milk the remaining 25 seconds off the clock to put an end to USI's three-match winning.
The Eagles return to action Friday at 5:30 p.m. (CDT) when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University. USI also visits nationally-ranked Northern Kentucky University next Sunday.
