USI men's soccer adds five more for 2009
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team announced the addition five more players for the 2009 season. A total of 10 players have committed the USI men's soccer team and Head Coach Mat Santoro this spring.
Signing national letters of intent are goalkeeper Keenan Johnson (Greenwood, Indiana); defenders Sam Brotherton (St. Louis, Missouri) and Jacob Posey (Waterloo, Illinois); midfielder Kyle Etienne (Santa Claus, Indiana); and forward Jeff McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana).
Johnson joins the Eagles after four years at Center Grove High School (Greenwood, Indiana). He was second team All-State in 2008 as well as the county Player of the Year the last two seasons. Johnson also was first team All-Conference in 2008 and second team All-Conference in 2007.
In addition to Johnson, USI bolsters its defense with Brotherton and Posey.
Brotherton, who joins his brother Justin at USI, has lettered in soccer, basketball, and golf in his four years at Affton High School (St. Louis, Missouri). He was second team All-State as a senior, while being named the AHS Most Valuable Player the last two seasons. Brotherton also was a three-time All-Region player during his tenure at AHS.
Posey comes to USI after earning All-Conference honors in soccer as a senior at Gibault Catholic High School (Waterloo, Illinois). The letterwinner in soccer and basketball also led GCHS in scoring with 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists.
GCHS won the Illinois Class A state championship in soccer during the 2005, 2006, and 2007 seasons, while placing third in 2008.
The Eagles add Etienne to an already experienced midfield. The soccer letterwinner from Heritage Hills High School (Lincoln City, Indiana) was All-Pocket Athletic Conference and All-District as a senior, in addition to being named honorable mention All-State.
Up front, McClure brings an impressive resume from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory (Indianapolis, Indiana). The 2008 BJP Offensive Player of the Year was a two-time honorable mention All-Marion County performer and was named first team All-District in 2008.
McClure finished his tenure at BJP with 78 career points on 31 goals and 16 assists. He had his best season as a senior with 31 points on 12 goals and seven assists in helping the Braves to the 2008 sectional crown and the regional finals.
"USI is very pleased with these five signings," said Santoro. "Each of these student-athletes possesses the talent and attitude to represent what USI soccer desires to be as a program. We look forward to working with them for the next four years."
The six new players join goalkeeper Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmel, Indiana); midfielders Nolan Harvath (Fairmont, West Virginia) and Brandon Kim (Carmel, Indiana); and forwards Rush Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) and Brian Hake (Olney, Illinois).
