USI explodes for six goals against Lincoln

The University of Southern Indiana menís soccer team exploded for six goals in Saturdayís victory over Lincoln University, 6-2, at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles raised their record 3-1-0 overall, their best start since 1999 when USI was 4-1-1.

The six goals were the most by a USI squad since defeating Lincoln Memorial University at Strassweg, 7-0, in 1997.
Leading the way for the Eagles was sophomore forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana/Memorial), who had three goals, including the game winner this afternoon. Settles, who also posted an assist in the victory, leads USI offensively this season with 11 points on four goals and three assists.

Settlesí game winning goal came in the first half at 34:22 with the score tied 1-1. He put away the rebounding shot of freshman forward Matt Manning (Franklin, Tennessee) to make the score 2-1. Manning, who received an assist on the play, put the game away five minutes later at 39:50 with his first goal of the season to make the score 3-1.

Settles was followed offensively by senior forward Ed Pieper (St. Louis, Missouri). Piper, who is second on the team with eight points on two goals and four assists, scored a goal and dished out three assists this afternoon.

USIís first goal of the game came with the Eagles down 1-0 after Lincoln scored 1:08 into the contest. Junior midfielder/back Jarod Anslinger (Evansville, Indiana/North) scored his first goal of the season, unassisted, at 7:48.

The Eagles will be on the road for the next two matches as they open the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule. USI travels to the University of Indianapolis to play the Greyhounds Friday, September 14, and to Saint Josephís College to face the Pumas Sunday, September 16. Both matches are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The next home match will be Friday, September 21, when the University of Wisconsin-Parkside visits USI at Strassweg Field for a GLVC menís and womenís soccer doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
