USI men’s tennis starts NCAA Tournament on Friday
The University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team will start NCAA Division II Tournament action Friday, May 3, when it plays Shepherd College in the first round of the Great Lakes Regional hosted by number one seeded Northwood University. Match time is 9 a.m. (CT).
The Screaming Eagles enter the match with a 15-3 overall record after winning its fourth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference championship last weekend. USI is under the direction of Head Coach Jon Mark Hall , who is 122-46 (.726) in his seven seasons at the helm.
Hall also has been named GLVC Coach of the Year five times and will be looking to lead the Eagles to their first victory in NCAA Tournament action this weekend.
The Eagles are led by senior Ethan Davis (Sullivan, Indiana), who is USI’s all-time leader in singles victories with a 19-7 record this season. Sophomore Weston Phillips (Henderson, Kentucky) and junior Bhavesh Chadda (India) are following Davis closely in singles wins. Phillips posted an 18-6 record and has collected 47 singles wins in just two seasons, while Chadda had 17 wins in his first season with the Eagles.
In doubles, USI is led by Phillips and freshman Chris McCreight (Jeffersonville, Indiana) and senior Chris Crawford (Jeffersonville, Indiana) and junior Paulus Halim (Indonesia). Both pairs posted 14 victories this year.
Davis and freshman Daniel Halim (Indonesia) are one win behind in doubles with 13 in 2001-02.
Shepherd is 22-1 overall and is located in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
The winners of the USI-Shepherd and Northwood-Northern Kentucky University will play at 9 a.m. (CT) Saturday, May 4, for the right to advance.
