Epkey signs with USI men’s tennis
The University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team announced the signing of Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) to a letter of intent for the 2003-04 season. Epkey is the first player to sign with USI Head Coach Ross Brown.
Epkey is a senior at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana, where he has lettered in tennis all four seasons. Epkey was named to the All-State team twice in singles play and twice in doubles action.
With his partner, John Stone, he was the individual doubles champion in 1999. Epkey also helped lead the Center Grove to the Indiana state championship in 2001 and 2002 and to the Metropolitian Interscholastic Conference titles in three of his four seasons.
In Indiana junior tennis, Epkey is ranked second in the Central Indiana Tennis Association, 34th in the Midwest, and 190th nationally in boy’s 18s. He has played in two of the biggest junior tournaments in 2002 – the Winter Super National and Super National Clays.
Originally from Evansville, Joe’s brother, Tony, played for Mater Dei High School and currently plays for West Virginia University.
“I have been coaching college tennis for 12 years and Joe is definitely one of my best recruits to sign if not the best,” said Brown. “Joe, who is originally from Evansville, is extremely talented and has tremendous potential. With this potential, Joe brings a great work ethic and competitive toughness.
“Having a player like Joe on our team will open the door for top student athletes from Indiana to give us a serious look,” continued Brown. “He will be the foundation of our team for the next four years.”
