USI takes close match with Evansville
The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team won its season opener with a 4-3 victory over the University of Evansville on the road Friday evening at Carson Center.
USI picked up the doubles point by winning the number two and three doubles match. Freshman Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) and junior Kyle Taylor (Veedersburg, Indiana) combined for their first wins as Screaming Eagles with an 8-6 victory at number two doubles, while senior Weston Phillips (Henderson, Kentucky) and junior Evan Luttrell (Logansport, Indiana) clinched the double point with an 8-2 win.
With USI up 1-0, the match came down to the outcome of four three-set matches.
USI and UE split the first two singles in straight sets. Phillips posted his first singles match of the year with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number one.
Number three and four singles decided the match in favor of the Eagles. Junior Nim Shetty (India) recorded his first victory as USI player, winning 6-2, 5-7, and 6-1, while sophomore Ryan Hughes (England) had to comeback from a set down to win 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.
